[Poem] Softly

With the quiet determination
Of toddler seeking cookie
You drew yourself up
Face tilted towards me
Hands balled into fists
Arms pinned to your sides
you were mentally preparing
To say something
You took a deep breath
Blinked
Slowly you broke silence
“Can I have this dance?”
One fist relaxed into a hand
Reached out and found mine
I stood and we whirled
